Recognizing the Signs That Your Child Needs a Filling
There are a few different signs that your child may have a cavity that requires a filling. Your child may report that their tooth feels funny or hurts. If your child has a serious and painful toothache that lasts for more than a day or two, it’s likely that they have a deep cavity, or may even have an infected tooth.
Your child may also be more sensitive to some foods and drinks. Sweets, for example, may cause your child’s teeth to hurt if they have a cavity. They may also be more sensitive to hot and cold foods and beverages.
If you would like to look at your child’s mouth to determine if they have a cavity, you may be able to recognize it visually. The first stage of tooth decay usually appears as white spots on the affected teeth. As the tooth decay progresses and becomes a cavity, you may notice a light brown stain or visible pit on the surface of the tooth. As the cavity becomes deeper, this stain will become darker or even black, and you will be able to see a visible hole in the tooth.
If you notice one or more of these signs, it’s very likely that your child has a cavity, and will need a filling. Contact the team at Miles of Little Smiles to schedule an appointment in White Plains for your little one right away with Dr. Mila or Dr. Dee today.
The Filling Process at Our White Plains Practice
The filling process takes only a single appointment at our White Plains office. Dr. Belgrade will clean and numb your child’s mouth. Then, she will use a dental drill to remove any decayed enamel from their teeth. Next, she will apply a tooth-colored composite material to the tooth in layers, and rebuild the structure of the tooth.
Once the tooth’s structure has been completed, Dr. Belgrade will harden the composite material, and trim it to ensure that your child’s tooth looks and feels completely natural. Then, she will check your child’s bite to ensure a perfect fit. This completes the procedure.
The Healing Process
Your child’s tooth will be numb when they leave the office, but after a few hours, the numbing will wear off. Your child may feel some discomfort and sensitivity for a few days following the procedure. This is normal.
Within a few days, their tooth will be completely healed and restored. If your child is complaining of pain and sensitivity in their filled tooth for longer than about two weeks after their procedure, however, you may want to come back to our office for a check-up.
Can fillings fall out?
It’s very rare for fillings to fall out. Usually, fillings are only pulled-out when they are old and worn down, and have pulled away from the tooth and become loose. A filling can also be pulled out if the tooth structure around it begins to decay. Both of these situations are very unusual in children, however.
