What is considered a Dental Emergency for children?

If your child is experiencing pain, discomfort or bleeding and you’re not sure how to treat their problem on your own, their condition counts as a dental emergency.

Toothaches are one of the most common dental emergencies. A toothache often indicates the presence of a cavity or a tooth infection. If your child has a toothache that won’t go away after a day or two, it is important to get help right away.

Loose fillings or crowns are also common. Your child may pull out or loosen their dental work when eating sticky foods. This is an emergency, as the remaining enamel below their dental work may be vulnerable to further damage and decay.

Knocked-out teeth are also a relatively common pediatric dental emergency. Slips and falls, injuries from contact sports and other such accidents may loosen or knock out a tooth. Whether your child has a knocked-out baby tooth or permanent tooth, it is crucial that they get treatment right away. The tooth must be replaced within 1-2 hours to save it.

What should I do if my child’s tooth gets knocked out?

First, call our White Plains dental office at (914) 949-6655 to let us know you’re coming in. Your child’s knocked out tooth must be replaced within 1-2 hours at most to save it. Next, recover your child’s tooth and rinse it with warm water. You can put the tooth back in the socket to keep it moist or put it in a small container of cold milk.

Then, come to our office as soon as you can, so that we can splint your child’s tooth back into place. If you don’t see us within 2 hours of the injury, your child’s tooth will most likely die, and we won’t be able to replace it.
